Background

Indoor air quality has become a critical concern in schools, where hundreds of students and teachers share enclosed classrooms daily. In this particular teaching building, the existing central air conditioning system provided adequate ventilation but failed to effectively remove fine particles, bacteria, and viruses. Frequent complaints of dust, odors, and seasonal flu outbreaks highlighted the urgent need for an advanced air purification solution that could integrate seamlessly with the current HVAC system.

Solution

The IEF (Industrial Electronic Filter) module, based on Airdog’s TPA technology, was selected to upgrade the building’s air purification capability. Unlike traditional HEPA filters, IEF uses active ionization and collection to capture PM2.5, neutralize bacteria and viruses, and reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Its washable collector plates eliminated the recurring cost of filter replacement, while its low air resistance minimized energy consumption of the HVAC system.

Implementation

Several IEF modules were installed directly within the central air handling units (AHUs) serving the teaching building. The modular design allowed quick integration without major structural changes. The system was commissioned during a school holiday period, ensuring no disruption to classes. Teachers and facility managers received training on the simple cleaning process for the collector plates, ensuring long-term sustainable operation.

Results

After implementation, air quality monitoring showed a 70–90% reduction in PM2.5 levels, along with a significant decrease in bacterial and viral presence in indoor air. Students and staff reported a noticeable improvement in classroom freshness and fewer cases of seasonal respiratory infections. Energy usage of the HVAC system remained stable due to the low-pressure-drop design of the IEF modules.

Value

The IEF installation not only enhanced the health and comfort of the school environment but also provided a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution. It demonstrated the adaptability of IEF technology in educational facilities, highlighting its role in creating safer, healthier spaces for learning.
